Reflecting on the KMTA Conference of 2026
The Kansas Music Teachers Association State Conference took place at Wichita State University on September 18th & 19th, 2026. It was a fun and busy time that included fifteen sessions, two masterclasses, a recital, a keynote speaker, a composer premiere, a poster session, exhibitors, a banquet, and a business lunch!

As the 140th anniversary of KMTA, several local groups including WMMTA created picture memory boards which were displayed throughout the event. Exhibitors included Gartens Music who brought two digital pianos…we had lots of background music and sight-reading occurring throughout using music from the WSU free-music display. Nathan Rau had a great piano technician display, and Dr. Nathanael May represented Friends University.

Dr. Jerome Lowenthal played an amazing recital at age 94! His encore of Clair de Lune brought many to tears. He and Julie gave great masterclasses, and Beth Klingenstein’s keynote on Arts Advocacy was also wonderful.

While I was the VP for the KMTA Conference and in charge of organizing, scheduling, fundraising, etc., this event would not have been possible without huge help from WMMTA members: Christy Williams and River Community Church hosted the banquet and lunch, Carole Pracht organized our delicious catering, and Shirley Wiebe created extraordinary snack tables! Marissa Vance created a pretty WMMTA sign, and Karen Wagner and Sally Buxton made memory boards for WMMTA and KMTA. Our SMTA students made us proud through hard work, leadership, conference program design, and poster presentations! Many thanks to WMMTA for the financial donation which went to an ad in the conference booklet and financed the snack tables.

With 70 attendees including sixteen students from four universities, Duerksen Fine Arts was bustling! If you had to miss the conference this year, consider attending next year. KMTA state conferences are something to be proud of with diverse sessions, high-quality performances, and supportive colleagues!
